The Best Ways to Stay Regular

!±8± The Best Ways to Stay Regular

One of the most common concerns my patients have is how to stay regular. Although it rarely indicates a major health concern, constipation can cause discomfort, bloating and lack of energy. When you feel uncomfortable, it's not easy to focus on work, family and other important activities. Many people think harsh laxatives are the only answer to the problem, but that is not the case. Fortunately, there are natural treatments and easy ways to stay regular that don't require prescription drugs or cause annoying side effects.

Curing Constipation

If you have gone longer than two to three days without a bowel movement, there is a good chance you are suffering from constipation. Your first thought may be to pick up a laxative at the drug store, but these medicines can cause cramps, diarrhea or dehydration. To cure constipation naturally, you can turn to herbs and other natural remedies that have been used for centuries to gently restore balance to the body.

To tackle clogged bowels, psyllium husk is a highly effective option. Derived from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant, this grainy substance is sold in natural food stores. Follow the directions on the package or simply stir a spoonful into a glass of juice and drink up.

Psyllium is often mixed with sweeteners and other artificial ingredients to make products like Metamucil and Fiber Con. Natural psyllium has no additives and is less expensive. You can drink psyllium up to three times per day to fight constipation and once a day to maintain regularity.

Ayurvedic medicine, which is popular in India, encompasses some natural cures for constipation. Ayurvedic practitioners recommend senna, an herb that encourages easier bowel movements. Licorice root has similar properties to senna, and the two may be used together. Coriander leaves, often used in Indian cooking, are another trusted remedy that helps balance the digestive system.

Hot liquids may encourage bowel movements, so teas and tonics are a good choice. Dandelion tea has many health properties and is thought to relieve constipation. You should be able to purchase dandelion tea bags in health food stores. Honey is a centuries-old home remedy for a variety of ailments, including constipation. Mix a tablespoon with hot water and sip after meals.

Natural Prevention

Even people with healthy digestive systems occasionally fall prey to constipation. Stress, travel or a change in eating habits may be to blame. Taking preventative steps can keep your body functioning smoothly, even when life gets hectic.

You've probably heard about the importance of fiber, especially as it relates to preventing constipation. Fiber is the natural bulk in whole grains, vegetables and fruit that is indigestible to the body. Fiber attaches to the stool and helps it move easily and quickly through the digestive track.

The surest way to get adequate fiber in your daily diet is to load up at breakfast. Look for cereals with at least 5 grams per serving. Eat whole grain or sprouted grain breads, English muffins or pitas. Breads should have at least 3 grams of fiber per slice. Add a piece of fiber-rich fruit, like pears, apricots, strawberries, apples, dried prunes or dates, peaches or pineapple.

Other high fiber foods that anyone can fit into their diet are beans, which can go into salads, burritos, soups or grain dishes; nuts, which are filling and packed with antioxidants; and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Ground flax is another superfood you can trust to keep you regular. Sprinkle it on yogurt, cereal, salads, grain dishes or soups. If you are too busy to change your diet, natural supplements can help. Look for those containing flax and probiotics, the good bacteria that keep your digestive track healthy.

The more high fiber, unprocessed foods and supplements you consume, the happier your digestive system will be. In case constipation does take you by surprise, look to natural cures that have been used for many years to restore balance and comfort. Constipation is an unfortunate condition most people have to deal with, but remember that you can choose to manage it naturally.

What Type of Food Do Turtles Eat

!±8± What Type of Food Do Turtles Eat

What do turtles eat? It depends on the type of turtles, how old they are and where they are located. Generally, turtles are carnivores when they are young. However, they turn into omnivores or herbivores when they grow up and mature, depending on their type.

To answer the question "What do turtles eat?" we'll start by listing the common types of turtles and what they like to eat:

o While River Cooter turtles feed primarily on plants, Map turtles and Malayan Box turtles eat meat and lots of plants.

o American Box turtles feed on anything it gets.

o Meat forms the principle diet of the Chinese 3-Striped Box turtles.

o The Red-Eared Slider turtles end up being omnivores on maturity after starting off eating bugs and worms when they are young.

o Snapping turtles look for small creatures to eat, while most other turtles simply eat plants.

o Most turtles eat shellfish, insects, water plants or fish.

o To ward off predators, turtles often eat poisonous plants like poisonous rhubarb, ivy and avocado found near their habitat.

o Pond turtles in the US eat from a wide list consisting of insects, arthropods, small shellfish, snails, worms and small fish.

o Poisonous plants should not be in a pet turtle's diet as the owner may not know which plants they were acclimatized to in their natural surroundings.

o What pet turtles should eat is good and healthy food. If you bought the turtle from a pet store, they most likely also sell the food that the turtle eats.

o Aquatic turtles eat aquatic aquarium plants, small live fish, dried shrimp and floating turtle pellets found at the pet store.

o Land turtles eat special pellets made for land turtles. While some eat worms, others eat fruits, vegetables, and meal worms.

o Processed foods with high contents of salt and preservatives run a risk of damaging the turtle's digestive system.

o Milk or dairy products can make them sick and should be totally avoided as their stomachs lack the enzyme for breaking down lactose.

o Turtles sometimes eat fruits such as bananas, grapes, mangoes, blueberries, apples, strawberries and other citrus fruits.

o Turtles can also eat chicken, turkey, cooked fish in small quantities, mealworms, boiled eggs, earthworms, silkworms, shrimps, snails and crickets. Raw meat with too much fat can get contaminated and
should be avoided.

o Domestic turtles eat leafy vegetables like carrot tops, fig leaves, red and green lettuce, corn, green bean and peas, beets, squash, okra and plantain weed.

o Turtles also love to eat flowers like roses, pansies, petunias, borage, geraniums, carnations, hyssop and nasturtium.

o Phosphorus goes with the kind of food preferred by the turtle, but you should take precautions and watch out for the calcium intake and minerals like vitamin D3 in the turtle's diet as they have a direct bearing on its health. Vitamin D3 can be given as a dietary supplement if your turtle is lacking the vitamin. Exposure to sunlight or reptile light also helps in producing it in the turtle's body.

Fourth of July Party Ideas - Mini Meals Make Mealtime Fun For Kids

!±8± Fourth of July Party Ideas - Mini Meals Make Mealtime Fun For Kids

For adults portions that are bigger are better but kids like the little stuff. Mini meals are fun and tasty. Try these ideas at your Fourth of July Party. The kids will love you for it.

Salad to go. Wash endive leaves. Fill the broad end with a teaspoon of your kid's favorite prepared salad. Wash butter lettuce leaves, selecting the smaller more pliable leaves. Spread out the lettuce leaf and put a tablespoon of salad on the end nearest you. Roll the leaf forward covering the salad. Tuck the ends of the leave under as if you were rolling up a burrito. Lightly fill celery stalk with cream cheese. Press dried cranberries or raisins into the cheese. Cut into child bite sized pieces. For a change use flavored cream cheese.

Child sized pizzas. Use refrigerator biscuits. Lightly flour a board. Roll each biscuit flat doubling the size of the biscuit. Place biscuits on cookie sheets. Spread with a teaspoon of tomato sauce, pizza sauce or spaghetti sauce. An alternative is to use a slice of fresh tomato. Top with mozzarella cheese. Bake as package directs.

A veggie platter and dip can be made special by using baby vegetables. Carrots, summer squash, patty pan squash, string beans, both yellow and green should be blanched by immersing in boiling water for one minute and then in immediately in an ice bath. Add snap pea pods, grape tomatoes, both red and yellow, and boiled baby potatoes.

Mini tacos are fun and easy. Use the corn chips that are made for dipping and have a bowl shape. Fill with a teaspoon of cooked taco meat, a bit of refried beans and top with shredded cheese. Bake until the cheese just melts.

Usually the challenge with kids and desserts is to stop the kids from only eating the sweet stuff. Here are a few suggestions to carry the mini theme forward. Use small cookies like vanilla snaps or mini chocolate chips cookies. Place a tablespoon of ice cream on the flat side of one cookie and cover with the flat side of another cookie to make a sandwich then freeze in a plastic container.

Use a medium size sugar cookie, about a 3 inch diameter. Frost with vanilla pudding and top with slices of fresh strawberries for a mini strawberry tartlet. Make different varieties: Use chocolate pudding and raspberries, lemon pudding and fresh blueberries.

Children will love you for making them feel special at your Fourth of July party
